Fluent: Design Behind the Design How our Fluent Design System focuses by Joseph McLaughlin Microsoft Design

Fluent’s superpower is its ability to adapt to different platforms and environments. That means that we tailor our updates to each platform we support. You’ll be able to build a fluid and natural experience for your customers every time. Manuscript grids have a primary structure defined by large continuous blocks of text surrounded by margins. This style helps to ensure readability by consolidating content to provide the optimal line length. Different content types can render better when using fixed, stretch, or hybrid grid models.

The Whats, Hows, And Whys in Design Systems

This approach reaches toward the greater good for designers, the products we shape, and the customers who use them. Microsoft does not lack in design talent, but certainly faces the very real challenge of learning to scale and span the products and experiences as we grow. Engineers and designers get together to figure out what the scope of an idea is, how much effort it would be to do it, what the benefit is for customers. This effort could last for part of a release or it could last a few releases, depending on how complex the thing is.

Built for focus

We believe our Fluent principles will guide our product experiences for years to come. They’re grounded in our deep understanding of how customers navigate the world, and are rooted in our beliefs about what empowers people to achieve more. Baseline grids consist of dense horizontal rows that provide alignment and spacing guidelines for text. Aligning baselines to a specific absolute grid establishes a vertical rhythm — a pattern that’s easier for the human brain to scan. Baseline grids are especially useful with content that spans multiple columns.

Neutral colors

Then, after a few months, we start to see it becoming pervasively available in the creator community. Our partner teams across Microsoft, like Office, Cloud and Enterprise (C&E) and Xbox do the same thing, so this is a collaborative and cumulative effort. At the end of the day, we’re building tools for app developers to create experiences for their customers, so we all need to be in sync. Design systems are a logical development for the entire web. They greatly simplify the work on large products, update them faster, release new projects in the brand ecosystem, and make the user experience smoother. After creating a design system, it is crucial to figure out how to implement it in its practice.

microsoft design system

The Fluent provider defines the styles that are used in your app. A divider groups sections of content to create visual rhythm and hierarchy. We’ve also refreshed the Fluent icon from a cube to an F shape. The icon is a visual representation of the iconic four squares of the Microsoft logo reassembled to create a new form.

As more space is added between elements, their perceived relationship weakens. Elements arranged in the same spacing pattern are seen as related pieces that have equal weight and implied connection. These four phases occur in each release cycle, and they allow us to always have a full set of work that we’re rolling into. That way, we never have to be super precious about moving forward with any single hypothesis or feature. To get started with MSTest SDK, it is needed to create a MSTest project (or update an existing one) and replace the content of the .csproj file.

Content underneath the photo can also stretch to show more but uses different margins to add variety in the composition and helps to define visual hierarchy. Responsive design uses just one layout where the content is fluid and can adapt to changing format size. This design technique uses media queries to inspect a given device’s characteristics and renders content accordingly.

Our efforts do not seek a one-size-fits-all answer or design for the lowest common denominator. Instead, Fluent must encompass our shared foundation plus layers of product experience and brand expression, across platforms. Fluent is evolving to be more than a set of outcomes and will define the process by which we collectively design and build products. It represents the growth and influence of design thinking within Microsoft. Your app creator audiences are made up of a mix of designers and developers. Historically, Microsoft has been such an engineering-oriented company that when we built the Insider Hub and the feedback tools, we started by wanting to energize and engage the developer community.

Evolving the Microsoft Fluent Design System

In fact, UI elements that are set close to each other might be overlooked. People may notice the grouping but not process each individual item. At the same time, if you’re a designer, there’s a bunch of design-oriented discourse on those same pages where we have code.

Each value in the Fluent palettes is stored as a context-agnostic global token. Alias tokens then provide the context that makes it easy to choose the right color without having to hunt down hex codes. Today, Fluent is simple in its emphasis on systematizing the fundamentals. It’s an attempt to optimize the process for both designers and developers through a shared foundation. At least in its initial stage, it’s as much about process as it is about pixels and interactions. It’s less about creating something new and more about establishing coherence.

All required test suites and configurations will be transparently changed to fit this specialized mode. More information about testing with Native AOT is available here. Microsoft plans to build on the experience it has gained, adding more resources and enabling even greater scalability for multi-physics modeling. Within the Design Thinking phases, there are opportunities to embed systems thinking models. For example, during the Ideate phase, using causal loops would help clarify the Theory of Success.

Shared colors are aligned across the M365 suite of apps and are used in Fluent high-value, reusable components like avatars, calendars, and badges. Shared colors allow for quick mental recognition of components and functions across products. On the updated Fluent Design website, we tell the story of the evolution of our design system using the Fluent color, typography and modular grid. In many ways, the new visual identity reflects our shift away from an overly polished or dimensional approach. Like the building blocks that compose it, the new identity embraces a “some-assembly-required” approach.

New 12 Mixed Fruit Cake Designs Images in 2023

fruit cake design

Fresh fruit cake needs to be refrigerated if made with dairy-based creams such as whipped cream, Chantilly cream, buttercream, or cream cheese frosting. Refrigeration preserves the cake and helps it firm up. To preserve the freshness of fresh fruits and their appealing look, place the fruits, whole or sliced, on a cake before serving. Alternatively, brushing the fruit with a clear glaze and refrigerating the cake one day before can also help to maintain its freshness. It is not recommended to freeze a cake with fruit and whipped cream, but you can bake the Genoise sponge cake in advance and freeze it for up to 3 months.

For ease of browsing, here are all of my muffin and quick bread recipes in one place. You could do something similar with other tyles of fruit as well. Then there are the blueberries studded into the watermelon base. This is a simple idea, but gives you such an amazing contrast of colors. While all the fruit looks amazing, the way the kiwis have been cut really steal the show. The green of the kiwis and grapes is also an exceptional contrast against the pink of the watermelon and strawberries.

Recipe variations

After washing and patting them dry, slicing the strawberries just before placing them on the cake helps maintain their freshness and texture. Additionally, lightly dusting the sliced strawberries with sugar can help draw out excess moisture and prevent sogginess. Another mistake to avoid is using overripe or underripe fruit. Overripe fruit can be too soft and juicy, which may cause it to slide off the cake or release excess moisture onto the frosting. On the other hand, underripe fruit may not have optimal flavor or sweetness. Selecting fruits that are at their peak ripeness will ensure that they not only look beautiful on the cake but also taste delicious.

If you have no luck with that, there are plenty of places to order dragon fruit online. This is still a tiered watermelon cake with berries on the side, but it still manages to stand out. This is mostly because of the dragon fruit balls.

Each decorative approach has its taste and aesthetic appeal. Once you’re done, pour that glaze over your fruit cake or use a brush to apply it. Next, let the glazed top set for a few moments before setting decorative elements like cut fruit. Firstly, heat the apricot jam in a saucepan and use a sieve to filter out the lumps. Next, brush the smooth jam on top of the fruit cake. Besides that, other designs include edged drips, which can heighten the cake.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Once you whisk all the ingredients together, you should be left with a fluffy consistency. Now you can either slap on the frosting with a spatula or use a piping bag for more intricate designs. She updated this article to include the most up-to-date information. Ben Mims is a former cooking columnist for the Los Angeles Times.

More Cake Recipes

When it comes to decorating cakes with fruit, having the right tools and equipment is essential for achieving a beautiful and professional-looking result. There are several key items that can make the process of working with fruit as cake decorations much easier and more effective. When deciding on the type of fruit to use in your fillings and frostings, consider the flavor profile of your cake.

Keep in mind when ordering a fruitcake that shipping and delivery dates will vary with each supplier. Most of the fruitcakes in this round-up are shipped nationwide, several days a week, although some bakeries have cutoff times for weekly shipments. Some of the larger operations ship every day during the business week and offer several different shipping speed options. It’s best to plan your delivery well in advance of when you think you’ll need it to ensure it’ll arrive on time. You can take comfort in knowing that most fruitcakes will hold for an extended time. As for the fruitcake, it's filled with pineapple, raisins, walnuts, pecans, and more, with flavorful notes of cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, and ginger.

The incorporation of buttermilk adds to the cake’s flavor, creating a tender crumb that’s just perfect. This recipe calls for cake flour and unsalted butter—key ingredients for achieving that fluffy cake texture we all love. You can make a cake with fruit inside, also decorating it atop. Fresh fruit keeps its shape, avoids any discoloration of the cake, and doesn't release extra juices, which is characteristic of frozen fruits. Cover the disc of the sponge cake with ¼ Chantilly cream and arrange fruit pieces over the cream (photo 3).

This fresh fruit cake is popular in Asian countries and is commonly sold in Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese bakeries all over the world. In addition to a sharp knife, having a set of decorative cake stencils can add an extra level of creativity to your fruit-decorated cakes. Stencils can be used to create intricate designs using powdered sugar or cocoa powder, adding a visually stunning element to your cake decorations. Mastering these techniques will give you all you need to know about how to decorate a cake with fruit for any occasion. It is not every day that we see a perfect pink dragon fruit cake design.

However, the careful composition creates an elegant treat. I make a homemade fruit mix with dried apricots, raisins, figs, crystallized ginger, and candied cherries. You can change the type of dried fruit in the recipe, just make sure to use the same amount in total weight. We hope you guys loved the fabulous fruits cake designs on our website that we have collected for you.

Turn a Ceramic Village into a Gingerbread Village PB look 4 less!

pottery barn gingerbread house

Whichever Christmas candy you chose, you're guaranteed to have a ton of fun making these sugary creations. So gather your favorite sweet treats and get decorating — then grab a mug of hot cocoa, kick back and marvel at your gingerbread masterpiece. Now that your DIY gingerbread wreath is complete, it’s time to showcase your creativity! I also transformed some larger metal houses into gingerbread houses. I have a brief tutorial on my Instagram page @tatertotsandjello.

Roll, Cut Out and Bake the Walls and Roof

The gingerbread theme has taken over my Christmas decorating spree, starting with my galvanized lanterns and mini houses. In case you missed it, I documented the transformation of my galvanized lanterns into adorable gingerbread houses in a previous post (link here). I also got crafty with my mini galvanized houses, turning them into a festive gingerbread house wreath. Now, it’s time to share the joy of turning a plain ceramic village into a delectable Gingerbread Village.

However, some vintage collectors aren’t thrilled by the thrift store flip, claiming the DIYers are ruining valuable pieces from Christmas past. It’s time to gather your ingredients and equipment. First, print out the template and read through the recipe.

With the hashtag #potterybarndupe boasting over 56.6 million views, it’s clear there’s a desire for holiday decor that doesn’t break the proverbial bank. “Some of these are Dept 56 houses 😭 collectors items,” wrote @chloesage5, referring to Department 56, a company that specializes in hand-painted ceramic buildings and figurines. For a cheerful color theme inspired by the season’s best candy, you’ll want peppermint sticks, round peppermint candies and of course, candy canes of all sizes. Before assembling your house, add your decorations. For more ideas on how to do this, check out How to Decorate Your Gingerbread House. These are also good steps to take ahead of time, if possible.

The DIY Process

Create a cozy cabin fit for winter simply by swapping gingerbread for pretzel sticks. We’re smitten with this twist from Worth Pinning that retains a few familiar elements, like a holiday wreath and colorful gumdrops. For a little mountain lodge constructed of logs and buried in snow, you’ll need pretzel rods, pretzel snaps, gumdrops, graham crackers and mini candy canes. Before you shop for decorations, decide on a decorating theme like the ones below.

pottery barn gingerbread house

How to Decorate Your Gingerbread House

The idea was to replicate the icing and candy decorations you’d find on a classic gingerbread house. However, the puffy paint turned out to be a bit too thick for my liking, resulting in a somewhat sloppy appearance. Learning from this, I decided to switch gears and rely on the precision of paint pens for the finer details. In large bowl, mix flour, baking soda, ginger, allspice, cinnamon, cloves and salt. In bowl of a 5-quart (or larger) electric stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat shortening and brown sugar on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in molasses and 1 1/8 cups cold water until mixed well.

The Cutest Gingerbread Houses

The combination of the warm gingerbread hues and the snowy accents created a perfect balance of coziness and winter enchantment. To achieve this festive transformation, I stuck to the winning combination of spray paint and non-smudge paint pens that worked wonders on my galvanized lanterns and houses. However, this time around, I wanted to add a 3-dimensional element to bring the gingerbread magic to life.

If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out these amazing gingerbread-themed projects from my talented friends. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a holiday decorating enthusiast, there’s something magical about turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, one gingerbread creation at a time. The transformation process was both joyful and therapeutic.

Turn a Ceramic Village into a Gingerbread Village. Add more icing to support the seam, if necessary. Prop up walls with cans or bottles; allow to set 30 minutes. Repeat for remaining back wall and side wall pieces, attaching all sides of house; allow to set 30 minutes. Get ready for the holidays with creative gingerbread house ideas, including charming ornaments and mugs adorned with gingerbread designs. Add a festive touch to your decor with these delightful gingerbread-themed accessories.

Take a basic gingerbread house to the next level with an edible sugar glass star and intricately piped icing decorations. I’ve been inspired by the creativity of my friends who have embarked on their own gingerbread-themed projects. From gingerbread wreaths to gingerbread-scented ornaments, the holiday spirit is alive and thriving. The sense of community and shared enthusiasm for bringing a bit of sweetness into our homes has made this Christmas season truly special. ‘Tis the season for festive transformations, and this year, I’ve taken my love for Christmas decor to a whole new level—turning a ceramic village into a whimsical Gingerbread Village. Last year, I shared my vibrant, hand-painted ceramic village.

Cut out larger pieces of gingerbread to create a country-style gingerbread barn. “TikTok is coming for pottery barns neck, love these [dupe] videos,” wrote @naturyl_shannon. “pottery barn is wild with their prices,” commented @rockinllamaco.

Allow cookie sheet to cool completely before moving onto next pieces, or use another large cookie sheet if you have more than one. Bake cutouts 10 to 13 minutes or until firm in center; remove from oven. With cutouts on pan, carefully replace pattern pieces on top of baked dough cutouts, and trim around edges; discard any trimmings, and remove pattern pieces. (Pan and dough will be hot.) Return cutouts to oven 4 to 6 minutes longer or until dry and lightly browned. Transfer parchment with cutouts to rack to cool completely. Initially, I experimented with puffy paint to create intricate details on the ceramic houses.

Too Cute To Eat: Gingerbread Houses

pottery barn gingerbread house

I loved coming up with different decorating swirls and motifs. I have included a close up of the different houses details for inspiration. The paint pens allowed me to infuse personality into each miniature dwelling, turning them into unique gingerbread creations.

BLOGGER’S BEST GINGERBREAD HOUSES

To make door and stained-glass window, with front wall still on parchment paper, replace front wall pattern piece (with door and window cut out). Carefully cut small door opening from front wall and remove cutout; set aside for later. Using a 1 1/2-inch circle cutter, cut small opening for window near top of front wall; remove cutout and any crumbs, and discard. In small resealable food-storage plastic bag, place two clear hard fruit candies, and seal.

Throw a Photo-Worthy Easter Celebration

If you don’t think you’ll use meringue powder or cream of tartar for anything besides this recipe, look for these items in the bulk section of your grocery store. “This is cute but as someone who collects the dickens village I’m HURTING,” commented @morganbarry4. Are you making your own gingerbread house this year?

Roll, Cut Out and Bake the Walls and Roof

As I worked on this project, I couldn’t help but think of all the creative possibilities that come with a gingerbread theme. It’s not just about painting; it’s about transforming ordinary objects into edible-looking masterpieces that bring joy to everyone who sees them. The Gingerbread Village has become the centerpiece of my holiday decor, eliciting smiles and admiration from friends and family alike.

The Gingerbread Galvanized Lanterns and Mini Houses

Transfer parchment and baked piece to cooling rack to cool completely. Carefully remove parchment from gingerbread house pieces. The holiday season is upon us, and there’s a sweet trend taking over the festive decor scene—gingerbread houses! But fear not, you can recreate this viral look for a fraction of the cost with just a can of spray paint, an evergreen wreath, and some paint pens.

Gingerbread House Ideas That'll Inspire You to Create an Epic Masterpiece

Revamp a plain ceramic Christmas village into a festive delight using spray paint, a white paint pen, and puffy paint. A base of spray paint provides a clean slate, while the white paint pen adds intricate details inspired by Pottery Barn’s gingerbread houses. Puffy paint adds the final touch, creating a personalized and whimsical holiday village. Using the photo at the beginning of this article as a guide, decorate side walls, front and back walls of house with icing and assorted decorations to make windows and wreath. Add shingles to roof pieces, attaching the round cutouts with a small amount of icing and overlapping them slightly, using photo as a guide. Let decorated gingerbread pieces stand at least 30 minutes until icing is set, before assembling the house.

Roof piece will hang slightly over the edges. Hold in place 1 to 2 minutes until icing starts to set. Use one to two jars or bottles for support underneath; allow to set 30 minutes. Attach front door, leaving slightly propped open; allow to set 30 minutes.

Fun in the Sun Backyard Party

Using flat side of meat mallet, gently pound to crush candies. Spoon crushed candies into opening, making sure candies touch edges of baked dough. (Do not mound candy in opening.) Carefully transfer parchment to large cookie sheet; return to oven 4 to 6 minutes or until melted. Remove from oven; cool 5 minutes on cookie sheet.

Remember to print out the template to make cutting out your pieces easy. Create a fun modern color scheme with pink frosting and green sour straps. Peppermint candy shingles and candy cane siding add an extra fun touch.

In large bowl, beat royal icing ingredients with electric mixer on low speed until mixed. Change speed to high and beat 7 to 10 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally, until very stiff. If desired, add gel food color to icing to create different looks for decorating. Prepare to top your gingerbread house with gumdrops, jelly beans, candy canes and a coating of powdered sugar snow.

With a peppermint window and a marshmallow roof, this house is (almost) too cute to eat. Those without a strong sweet tooth will appreciate this house. Decorated with almonds, macadamias and walnuts, this gingerbread residence is packed with protein.

While many viewers lauded the DIY dupe — “FINALLY!! ” commented user @jennafordie — others cried foul.

But this holiday season, the inspiration came from the viral sensation of the Pottery Barn gingerbread village. Now, every nook and cranny of my village is adorned with sugary sweetness and holiday cheer. Using the photo at the beginning of this article as a guide, decorate outside with any remaining final touches.

In fact, I took it a step further and transformed larger galvanized houses into charming gingerbread abodes. On lightly floured 16x12-inch piece of cooking parchment paper, roll remaining dough 1/8-inch thick. With lightly floured 1-inch round cutter, cut at least 120 circles to make shingles from dough, and transfer to large parchment-lined cookie sheet, spacing slightly apart. If necessary, reroll scraps, and continue with cutouts.

Here, contrasting styles share the same astrological theme. The crescent moon uses shaded realism, while the corresponding constellation boasts precise line work and silhouettes. Like the moon, the sun is also loaded with meaning when used in tattoos. This fine-line piece shows us a delicate example of combining the two together in a minimalist way. This black moon tattoo takes on a dark and mystical approach.

Two interlocked crescent moons ensconced in botanicals are a great idea for a set of matching tattoos. While they correlate, each person retains a degree of individuality with their personal choice of flowers, like the lotus that tops this backpiece. The size and simple nature of a crescent moon make it ideal for placing in a small, hidden place. "I love doing them behind the ears, ankles, the wrist, and pretty much everywhere," Vasquez says. "I love adding geometry or sometimes charms and beads to them. Incorporating designs opens a range of ideas and ways to make them flow with the shape of the body."

The artist used black and gray ink to carefully dot the petals, creating a faded look on the shading. A crescent moon tattoo filled in with colorful flowers almost looks as if the flora lay underneath the skin. A simple, thin-lined crescent moon tattoo is a great way to experiment with color if you're afraid of going overboard. The red-ink crescent here is complete with a face on the moon. By adding a small hand holding the crescent moon, this tattoo puts extra emphasis on the delicate feel of the symbol. The filled-in moon adds some black art contrast to the line-art hand.

With these moss crafts, you always want an even layer of moss to go down first. So I take my little pieces and carefully glue them to the board without hurting my fingers, gently pressing for about 5 seconds. I do this all around, but I put less around the top and bottom tips. This tiny crescent moon ankle tattoo might be as delicate and dainty as they come. Another dreamy whale and moon tattoo, this piece is even more otherworldly with the addition of stars and swirling clouds.

Fresh Moss Moon Idea – This moss looks like it’s growing right out of this wreath. White Flower Crescent Moon – White florals are some of my favorites. She has worked in digital media for over five years and is an expert on a range of topics, including tattoos, piercings, and culture. Her work can be seen across the web on Backstage Magazine, Merry Jane, Vulture, and more. These full moons are 3.5” and there are three moons included on the page. This printable includes a 7.5” full moon that covers the entire page.

The waning crescent moons are a call to think about what you can release that is no longer serving you. This ring-shaped crescent moon is so thin that it makes the olives, which represent peace and friendship, the prominent part of this piece. We love the contract in shading between both symbols, too. Here, an angel sits on a simple crescent moon in an illustrative, single-line style. The artist also inked minimalist dots hanging like a jeweled chain from the moon.

The multiple lines denoting the shape of this moon gives it the look of a single line sketch. Leafy foliage brings an earthy element to the cosmic illustration. A solid black moon is perfectly on theme to pair with a fang-bore snake. The slithering creature provides a lot of placement opportunities for different ways to creatively coil around the moon. A crescent made entirely of flowers ties in the feminine aspect of the moon while remaining slightly more ambiguous. Found something you love but want to make it even more uniquely you?

crescent moon design

This dot work moon is flipped to face down and is hanging with various flowers and botanicals. The artist used varying sizes and boldness in the dots, creating a sense of texture to contrast the dark outline. Here, the crescent moon is serving as the bow for this bow and arrow tattoo. Two very powerful symbols, the moon and arrow can come together to create a new and powerful combined meaning. A modern cursive font follows the shape of the crescent in this tattoo.

The addition of an upside down crescent moon in this design suggests that the only things to be caught in this dreamcatcher will be growth and creativity. As another symbol of the night, an owl fits perfectly in place with a crescent moon in this fine line tattoo. A tiny whale tied to an even tinier moon feels like something out of a dream. Careful black and gray shading creates a whimsical but realistic tattoo. You never know when you are going to need some moon printables.

This tiny piece uses only a few strokes and makes the perfect minimal wrist tattoo. Note the way the artist doubled the moon's outline as the flower stem. In this moon and flower tattoo, the crescent features thin line art with dots on either tip for shading. The lilies at the bottom emphasize the beauty and divinity of the moon. Our printable PDF file encapsulates outline sketches of these moon illustrations. Once printed, they serve as perfect templates for crafting, paper cutting art, or coloring.

With the focus taken off the moon, the crescent we see here is almost more of an afterthought to the bundle of flowers and leaves around the skull. Crescent moons provide a lot of opportunities to serve as a base for hanging decoration. Here, we have feathers, jewels, and flowers trickling off the moon like a dreamcatcher. "Most of mine/our clients love delicate and small tattoos; my job is to make them look aesthetically aligned with the body," explains Vasquez.

This crescent moon tattoo looks like what you might see in the night sky. Rather than a hard outline surrounding the entire crescent shape, we see a defined outer edge and a more realistic-looking fade of textured black, white, and gray. This mid-size ankle crescent moon has a face, adding a bit of whimsy to the design.

A crescent moon above this eye tattoo could symbolize the knowledge of empowerment, which the crescent moon represents. Give your crescent moon some personality by adding a little animation.

Many sellers on Etsy offer personalized, made-to-order items. Here is a selection of four-star and five-star reviews from customers who were delighted with the products they found in this category. For a generation, this mansion sat resplendent and serene on its knoll in the best part of Bel-Air. The interior was lavish, in many cases extravagant, but usually tasteful.

There's just something about the face on this crescent moon that gives off peaceful vibes. We love how this realistic tattoo showcases more than just a crescent moon, but the moon in all its phases. This large lunar birth flower piece is romantic and bold. Expertly sharp lines and delicate shading throughout give the flowers life and movement.

Firmly hold for 10 seconds, then apply more hot glue right nxt to the string that you are holding. After I finish covering the base area with moss, I like to press all around to make sure everything is even firmly. If you like, this is your moment to add more moss to different areas to make it look like it’s growing naturally.

“I’m definitely the one borrowing from her most of the time. Commonly referred to as the Harlow/Bern House, the home gets its name from the original owners, actress Jean Harlow and her husband, movie producer Paul Bern. The couple was married for just two months before tragedy struck—on September 5th, 1932, Paul Bern was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the head and a 38 caliber revolver in his hand.

Harlow was born on March 3, 1911 and died tragically of kidney disease at age 26 in 1937. His body was discovered by house staff who, rather than calling the police, immediately contacted executives at MGM, the studio where Bern worked. Though his death was ultimately ruled a suicide by police, many—including some of Bern's colleagues in the film industry—believe he was actually murdered and that the studio covered it up to save Harlow's career. Whichever the case, Bern wouldn't be the last owner of the home to suffer an untimely death. And while the glam room features a display of many of the magazine covers she’s graced, it’s the drawing of Harlow by an admirer, London artist Kelvin Okafor, positioned on the living room mantelpiece that means the most to her.

Being able to see the workmanship of different people within the Etsy community and to be able to collaborate with them has been one of the more creative experiences of my career," she says. It's been very interesting seeing it come back because, for me, I think it's a version of it that I don't necessarily recognize. To me, it just feels like its own thing. I wouldn't say that it's 100 percent accurate of what the actual 2000s was. I do think that we're doing some cherry-picking of just the best of the best. I'm sure someone would say that's been around in the '70s about a brand like mine, that is like, "I love the '70s." But I appreciate all of it and it's fun — and funny — to see.

I was going to so many different shows and that was the time when I was running into friends. No matter what was on your schedule, everything would change because there was always some surprise after-party or an extra dinner. We were out all night, up super early. As the years went on, I started going to less shows and really picking which ones I actually wanted to see, but it was so exciting.

Then as far as fine [jewelry], I've been doing fine on a very small scale with crystals. That's something that I've been doing myself because I source them and I charge them with the full moon and I sage them. So it's really just been this labor of love, but what's been so amazing is, over the course of two years, I've been able to really work in fine and figure out what I wanted to say when I decided to have a full collection with it. So now is the time, and I'm so excited about it.

There are things that cannot be taught; you just have to experience them. Some things just take time and it's getting to know yourself and really understanding yourself and understanding your eye. I'm very excited about my hoops that I've been working on for a very long time. I love hoops and they are the perfect weight. Everything was originally handmade and then reproduced, so you are really getting that handmade feel.
