“I’m definitely the one borrowing from her most of the time. Commonly referred to as the Harlow/Bern House, the home gets its name from the original owners, actress Jean Harlow and her husband, movie producer Paul Bern. The couple was married for just two months before tragedy struck—on September 5th, 1932, Paul Bern was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the head and a 38 caliber revolver in his hand.

What pieces do you still own from back then?

The family lived in a small apartment above the restaurant. Although Calvin came from a humble upbringing, he was inspired to move on to bigger and better things—and for that he would have to move West. Our crystals are handcrafted in 14 karat yellow gold with white diamond pavĂ© and set by master jewelers in our Los Angeles design studio. Each crystal used in these pieces is hand selected by Nicole and charged by the light of the full moon. Chosen for their healing properties and uses, no crystal is alike. Without her knowledge, Combs videotaped the assault and later shared it with several friends in the music industry, the suit alleges.

The oversized door knocker Madera Earrings are the focal point of the collection; finished off with diamond oval studs that graduate up the ear. The black enamel & diamond ring speak back to the design of the earrings to complement the set. In 1970 Fate Magazine published an article titled "Sharon Tate's Preview of Murder," which included an interview between Tate and journalist Dick Kleiner. In the interview, Tate recalls an eerie encounter that happened one night while she was staying alone at Sebring's house. According to the story, Tate woke up in the middle of the night and saw a strange, little man in her bedroom.

Harlow was born on March 3, 1911 and died tragically of kidney disease at age 26 in 1937. During her brief career she reigned as a queen of the silver screen and has since been named one of 50 greatest stars in the history of Hollywood by Entertainment Weekly. This hand-carved incense holder and plate by Kansas City-based The Object Enthusiast is made of marbled porcelain and terracotta clay, so it looks great in any bohemian-inspired home space. Another historic house, known as “The Castle,” which previously held the record for California’s oldest house, was moved alongside it. Unfortunately, in 1975, vagrants started a fire that damaged Harlow House and destroyed The Castle. After helping to establish many more neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Calvin passed away in 1899.

His body was discovered by house staff who, rather than calling the police, immediately contacted executives at MGM, the studio where Bern worked. Though his death was ultimately ruled a suicide by police, many—including some of Bern's colleagues in the film industry—believe he was actually murdered and that the studio covered it up to save Harlow's career. Whichever the case, Bern wouldn't be the last owner of the home to suffer an untimely death. And while the glam room features a display of many of the magazine covers she’s graced, it’s the drawing of Harlow by an admirer, London artist Kelvin Okafor, positioned on the living room mantelpiece that means the most to her.

Being able to see the workmanship of different people within the Etsy community and to be able to collaborate with them has been one of the more creative experiences of my career," she says. It's been very interesting seeing it come back because, for me, I think it's a version of it that I don't necessarily recognize. To me, it just feels like its own thing. I wouldn't say that it's 100 percent accurate of what the actual 2000s was. I do think that we're doing some cherry-picking of just the best of the best. I'm sure someone would say that's been around in the '70s about a brand like mine, that is like, "I love the '70s." But I appreciate all of it and it's fun — and funny — to see.

I was going to so many different shows and that was the time when I was running into friends. No matter what was on your schedule, everything would change because there was always some surprise after-party or an extra dinner. We were out all night, up super early. As the years went on, I started going to less shows and really picking which ones I actually wanted to see, but it was so exciting.

Then as far as fine [jewelry], I've been doing fine on a very small scale with crystals. That's something that I've been doing myself because I source them and I charge them with the full moon and I sage them. So it's really just been this labor of love, but what's been so amazing is, over the course of two years, I've been able to really work in fine and figure out what I wanted to say when I decided to have a full collection with it. So now is the time, and I'm so excited about it.

There are things that cannot be taught; you just have to experience them. Some things just take time and it's getting to know yourself and really understanding yourself and understanding your eye. I'm very excited about my hoops that I've been working on for a very long time. I love hoops and they are the perfect weight. Everything was originally handmade and then reproduced, so you are really getting that handmade feel.

Phillippina, the youngest daughter, never married, and lived in the house until her death in 1963. She operated it as a rooming house, meaning that many different people had the opportunity to reside in Harlow House over the 20th century. Calvin Jerome Harlow was born August 12, 1837, in Newton, Massachusetts, to Jerome and Mathilda Harlow. Calvin had two older sisters and one younger brother. Calvin’s parents owned a restaurant that was a popular meeting spot for the town’s elite.
